Description:

The Reina-Valera, also known as the Biblia de Casiodoro de Reina or Biblia del Oso, is one of the earliest translations of the Bible into Spanish. This work was based on translating the original Hebrew and Greek texts and was published in Basel, Switzerland, on September 28, 1569. Its translator was Casiodoro de Reina, a Spanish religious man converted to Protestantism. It receives the nickname Reina-Valera because Cipriano de Valera made the first revision of it in 1602.
Aside from the original text and the Latin versions, Casiodoro de Reina took into account previous works by Valdés (such as his Psalms in Spanish), Enzinas, and Pérez de Pineda, as well as the Biblia Ferrariense during his translation.
In the 1569 translation, Reina utilized the latest advancements in biblical sciences. For instance, he employed the division of the New Testament into verses, a feature that had only been introduced in printed form a few years prior (1550). He regretted that a new Peshita publication had arrived too late for him to consider.
This work has undergone numerous revisions, such as the one by Valera, a friend of Reina, who conducted the initial revision followed by many others. The most recent was in 1995 by United Bible Societies. It is now commonly known as the Reina-Valera Bible.
